Chapter Eleven

“So, what do you think?” the older woman asked Chase, affectionately patting the closest horse’s neck. The filly, the smaller of the two, arched her neck and nickered softly while Chase hovered protectively. Even a small horse outweighed the woman by hundreds of pounds. One misstep or a spook and she could be crushed under all that weight.

“I think they have a lot of potential for being half-wild and barely halter trained,” Chase said, suddenly feeling silly about saying that when an eighty-something pound elderly woman was cuddling up to horses that barely responded to her lead line a half hour before. They were almost a matched set, in fact, other than their size the only thing that really put them apart was their stockings. The filly had one stocking, and the gelding had two. Chase had already mentally nicknamed them One and Two.

Still, she was honor bound to be as honest as possible since she was representing Dee’s interests.

“Oh, I think they will surprise you,” she replied, switching her attention from the filly to the gelding.

“You do?” Chase asked curiously.

“I watched how they responded to you, I have no doubt you will have them doing what they are meant to do in no time.”

Confused by her answer, Chase felt like she had to explain the situation. “These aren’t for me, they’re for Dee St. John. He just asked us to swing by and check them out since we were in the neighborhood.”

“Did he?” Shiny-black-bird eyes glittered at her, not hiding their amusement at what Chase was starting to realize was her expense. The enigmatic question floated between them while Chase searched that face for clues. Something else was going on. She cast a glance behind her. Rowan was sticking close, close enough to listen in on their conversation but not close enough to join in. That was odd enough for her to take notice, considering that it was her father’s ranch that was involved.

“I’m sorry?”

The woman moved away from the horses and held her hand out. Even though she seemed spry enough, Chase reacted instinctively by offering her arm. The ground was uneven and she wouldn’t allow the woman to stumble. That seemed to please her, and Chase suffered the patented grandmotherly pat on the forearm that took the place of a thank you. “Come, let’s walk to the house. Negotiations are always best done over food. I even have sweet tea. You do still drink sweet tea, don’t you?”

Chase’s already severely abbreviated stride faltered. She stopped and turned to face the enigmatic woman, a woman she had assumed was Tommy’s mother, but now wasn’t so sure. Searching her face for some sign of recognition, she found what she was looking for in a certain way of smiling that reminded her of someone she knew all too well. “Ma’am? How do you know I drink sweet tea?”

“Would you believe me if a said a little bird told me?” The smile widened.

“Ma’am,” Chase tried again, feeling her frustration growing.
